The Department of Energy (DoE) recently issued the Electricity Generation Licence to Barakah One Company, the joint venture subsidiary company owned by the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) and the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO).The Electricity Generation Licence is a key regulatory requirement prior to operation. of the peaceful Barakah Nuclear Energy Plants in Al Dhafra area, Abu Dhabi. DoE is responsible for planning and setting the direction of the energy sector in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, guided by the vision of our wise leadership and the Abu Dhabi Plan, which aims to build a secure and sustainable economy.

The Electricity Generation Licence from DoE is an important milestone in advance of Nawah, the operating and maintenance subsidiary of ENEC and KEPCO obtaining the Operating License from the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR). DoE’s assessment and analysis has confirmed that Barakah One Company has met the requirements necessary to obtain the Electricity Generation Licence.  

H.E. Awaidha Murshed Al Marar, the Chairman of DoE, has stated that generating electricity from nuclear energy is one of the best long-term solutions for the production of clean, efficient and reliable electricity to support UAE’s continued economic growth and diversification. He is proud of the fact that the UAE is the first country in the Gulf region to have started such an ambitious journey towards the future and that the Electricity Generation Licence granted to Barakah One Company is the first of its kind in the region that will ultimately allow it to generate electricity from peaceful nuclear energy. 

In this regard H.E. said “One of the strategic objectives of the Department of Energy is to guarantee energy security and sufficient supplies of energy, thus we look forward to strengthen our cooperation with Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation and its subsidiaries to support the delivery of the UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Program and to promote sustainability in our nation, as well as to meet the economic aspirations and needs of coming generations”.

Al Marar also added: “Barakah One Company has demonstrated its commitment to all requirements which reflects the completion of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant in line with the highest standards of safety, security, quality and transparency.” 

The DoE aims at achieving the optimum level in the field of providing services related to the energy sector; also, it aims to develop the energy sector and keep pace with global developments. The energy sector includes all activities and services related to production, processing, storage, transmission, distribution, supply, sale and purchase of gas, oil and its derivatives. In addition, generation, transmission, distribution, supply, sale and purchase of all types of electricity (conventional, renewable and clean) and production, treatment, desalination, storage, transmission, distribution, supply, sale and purchase of water and collection, treatment and disposal of wastewater and recycling of wastewater treatment residues, as well as production, storage, distribution and supply of coolant for district cooling uses.
