The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) – the government entity in charge of ensuring the energy sector’s excellence and sustainability in the emirate – launched an integrated campaign titled "Powering the Olympics" today, as the official partner to the Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019.

The campaign consists of organizing initiatives and events in various locations around Abu Dhabi at venues that are set to host the Games; it reflects the Department’s commitment to supporting the event and raise awareness around energy sources and how best to consume them.

"Powering the Olympics" is based on four main pillars: involvement, sustainability, interaction, and power. It consists of six different initiatives that resonate with the DoE’s vision for the future of the energy sector in the emirate, as well as its role in raising awareness in the community about rationalizing the consumption of resources, benefitting from available ones, and channeling them towards sustainable development in the emirate.

The team representing the UAE in the Olympics will be taking part of the initiatives along with DoE staff members, foreign teams participating in the Games, and the audience who will be attending the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as the competitions.

The Department of Energy’s Chairman His Excellency Eng. Awaidha Murshed Al Marar said: "The UAE is a global leader in empowering people, which we regard as the primary resource in any country’s development. Our wise leadership is increasingly driving this approach even beyond the UAE’s borders, empowering people around the world in line with the values of tolerance, communication, and respect that characterize the Emirates. Hosting the Special Olympics World Games stems from our commitment to ensuring the success of all events held in Abu Dhabi, further establishing the emirate as a global destination for major events."

"The tournament’s objectives align with those of the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy to make use of all energy resources and integrate them, which is set to wield a significant future impact on diversifying energy sources and build a flexible and robust national economy," H.E. Al Marar added. "Supporting the Games is part of our social responsibility that revolves around two main axes, the first of which is raising awareness around the necessity of rationalizing the consumption of energy sources, in accordance with the "Ghadan 21" program and its four pillars – particularly, the lifestyle pillar. The second axis, meanwhile, is support for People of Determination as a segment of society with high potential to make contributions across all sectors."

In coordination with the event’s organizers and relevant authorities, the Department of Energy has selected various locations within Abu Dhabi City to host initiatives that engage the community in the energy generation process, as well as interactive activities for children. The DoE invites community members to visit these soon-to-be-revealed stands, which will also include stands for "athletes of determination".

The Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019 is taking place in the UAE Capital on March 8-22, 2019, with more than 7,000 athletes from over 170 countries.
